History
Profile
The Creole term "les Fordoches" means
remote bayou areas marked by debris and brush which
create water current obstructions.
During the Civil War,
"The Battle of Fordoche Bridge" was fought in
September 1863. Union troops were dispatched to prevent
the Confederacy from operating in the upper Atchafalaya
but the Confederates were successful in driving back the
Union forces.
In May 1864, the
Confederates were again victorious over the Union troops
at the "Skirmish on Bayou Fordoche Road".
Fordoche is often
credited with the birth of oil and gas production
industries in Pointe Coupee Parish when oil was
discovered at Fordoche on Christmas Day 1948. Early
prosperity was centered in the timber business and
around the railroad which runs through the center of
town
Today Fordoche is one of
the fastest growing residential communities in our
parish.
