History
Profile
Named by the
Pennsylvanian J.B. Johnson who came to Pointe Coupee
Parish sometime before 1862, Livonia was incorporated
into a town in 1959. The Town Hall was constructed in
1963.
Early occupations for
residents included farming and timbering, but the
discovery of oil and gas in nearby towns in 1948 brought
related service industries and developing interests.
Today agriculture and oil
related businesses are mainstays in the Livonia economy
but the transportation industry is a growing factor with
the location of a major railroad switching facility near
the town. Continued growth is expected because of this
rail facility as well as Livonia's location on the four-laned
US Highway 190 and its proximity to Interstate Highway
10.
