History
Profile
Chemin Neuf,
the New Road, known as "Bayou Sara Road", was
carved in 1822 as a shortcut from False River to the
Mississippi River.
A year later the renowned
St. Mary's Catholic Church was built.
In 1846, the parish
courthouse at the Pointe Coupee fort was destroyed by
fire. A new brick courthouse was built in 1847. The
present parish courthouse sits on that same site.
The "New Road"
post office was established at "False River,
Louisiana" in 1858 but soon closed due to onset of
the Civil War. Several battles were waged throughout the
parish during the War Between the States.
In 1875, the "Town
of New Roads" was incorporated. Fewer than 10 years
later, the incorporation was no longer used.
After much debate in
choosing a name for the Pointe Coupee Parish seat (Rose
Lake, St. Mary's and New Roads were considered),
"New Roads" was officially selected. Another
town charter for New Roads was formulated in 1894 and
the city celebrated its centennial in 1994.
The railroad came to New
Roads just before the turn of the century. The Texas
& Pacific Line (T&P) brought industry to the
parish and allowed the town to grow rapidly.
Today,
New Roads is the commercial hub and
seat of government of Pointe Coupee
Parish. Many fine retail establishments,
restaurants, four banks and modern health
care facilities call New Roads home.
Aside from being the
commercial center of the parish, New Roads and False
River have long been an important tourist attraction in
Louisiana. The tourism industry continues to grow in the
New Roads and False River areas as travelers seek the
history, culture, food and charm of attractions of the
beaten paths.
In short, modern day New
Roads is a progressive city that seeks to preserve the
small town charm and hospitality that the residents
exhibit daily.
