EWTN Global Catholic Network has appointed Ursula Murua as President of EWTN News, effective Nov. 1, 2026. She succeeds Montse Alvarado after more than three decades in Catholic media and over a decade helping shape EWTN News’ digital operations. Murua currently serves as Director of Digital Strategy at EWTN News and Editor-in-Chief of ChurchPOP. The appointment follows EWTN News’ January 2026 consolidation of Catholic News Agency and the ACI Group under one global identity.

Digital News Leadership

Murua has held leadership roles across digital, editorial and broadcast operations, including work with EWTN Noticias, the network’s Spanish-language nightly news broadcast. Her work has included audience insights, social media expansion, multilingual digital strategy and coverage of three papal conclaves, World Youth Days, Jubilees, International Eucharistic Congresses and Synods of Bishops.

Michael P. Warsaw, Chairman of the Board and CEO of EWTN Global Catholic Network, said:

“Ursula understands both the mission of EWTN and the rapidly changing ways people encounter news, faith, and one another. She has helped shape the digital transformation of EWTN News from within while remaining deeply committed to the truth of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church. Her experience, global perspective and understanding of our audiences make her exceptionally well prepared to lead EWTN News into its next chapter.”

New Multilingual Platform

EWTN News launched EWTNNews.com in January as a digital home for its global, multilingual news service. Spanish and Portuguese versions are planned as the next stage of the platform’s rollout.

Ursula Murua, Director of Digital Strategy at EWTN News, said:

“I have had the extraordinary privilege of watching Catholic media transform from radio and broadcast to websites, social media and mobile platforms, and now confront the challenge and promise of artificial intelligence as we seek new ways to reach people around the world. But the reason we do this work has never changed. People are hungry for truth, for meaning and ultimately for Christ. Our responsibility is to understand where they are, how they are searching and how we can faithfully meet them there.”

Leadership Transition

Alvarado has served as President of EWTN News since 2023. Pope Leo XIV has named her Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, effective Nov. 1.

Montse Alvarado, outgoing President and COO of EWTN News, said:

“As President, Ursula will continue the work we began together, expanding EWTN News’ digital presence and developing new ways to reach audiences while strengthening our commitment to journalism rooted in fidelity to the Gospel.”
